C l a u d e t t e "Rusty" M o e                       A r t i s t                        Special Art Projects

With more than 650 students representing 32 countries and 23 languages, Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School's  Big Bang Grant submission, the "Art of Writing" received a grant from
the Vancouver School District Foundation to present the school's story through writing, followed by the permanent installation of a commissioned work of art.

With 100 percent participation, the students wrote stories about the school, emphasizing its unique diversity, special programs and activities. Commissioned local artist, Claudette "Rusty"
Moe, read the stories, pulled out commonalities, and created a mural filled with colorful representations of those themes. The curved mural measures ten and one half feet in length and
three feet in height.

This one-of-a-kind mosaic now welcomes Eleanor Roosevelt's students and staff to each new school day and announces to all who enter, "This is our story!"

Mural Out-takes
Final design of the proposed mosaic mural.
The finished mosaic after installation. Semi-gloss and matte ceramic tile were used in
creation of the mural. Each piece was hand cut and glued onto a nylon mesh tile backing.
Due to the curvature of the wall, individual piece size was kept to around two inches. Once
the pieces were glued in place, the mesh was cut into 14-inch wide panels to accommodate
the weight of installation. The panels were thin-set mounted to the wall followed by a two-inch
surrounding border. Black grout was used to complete the installation.

The project took approximately two and one half months to complete.
