about the artist
Claudette Moe is a Northwest native residing in Vancouver, Washington for the past twenty years. Vancouver
borders the north side of the mighty Columbia River with the south side of the river marking the entrance into the
State of Oregon. Downtown Portland, Oregon is minutes away. Both cities share a wealth of historical and
cultural experiences enriched by the many artists who call this region home.
Claudette's artistic endeavors began at the tender age of six, and she continued to draw and paint as an on-again,
off-again hobby into adulthood. Her dream of becoming a full time artist never diminished regardless of how
seldom she found time to play out her creative side. The call to action came in the spring of 2004, and, with a
leap of faith and blind determination, Claudette left the corporate world for the life of an artist.
Through a combination of inspiration and happenstance, she became intrigued with mosaics and its history of
functionality. With that thought in mind and no experience in working with tile, Claudette embarked on her own
artistic journey creating art that reflected her personal style and sense of color. Her early works focused on art
that was functional, and she began creating tops for bistro and accent tables. Although her tables sold, what
clients found in her work was more art than functionality. Soon, the majority of her table top designs were
purchased as wall art. While Claudette continues to design table tops, the majority of her new work is designed
to display.
People who discover Claudette's
work are quick to compliment her
style and use of vivid colors. Her
style has been called non-
traditional mosaic and often
compared to stain glass.
Regardless of comparisons,
Claudette’s artwork most often
gets the reaction of "Wow ...
Beautiful", and, "I have never seen
anything like this."
artist statement
When I first started my new career, I spoke with a lot of professional
individuals whose business was tile. What I found was an endless
selection of styles, materials, and color. But, color was the driving force
for my designs, and the materials I use. Color evokes the senses, and I
wanted my work to speak to people on an individual basis. My work is
visual and touchable, and my subject matter varied. I hand cut the tiles so
that the individual pieces, when placed together, achieve a sense of flow
and connection.
The majority of tile I use is a semi-gloss glazed ceramic tile, and,
regardless of the depth of color selected, the combination of colors used
in my work make a statement through the design. I want my work to give
life to its surroundings, and, I hope to provide everyday enjoyment to
those who purchase my pieces. I will continue to experiment with color
and materials and to take risk with my designs that speak to my inner
artist soul as well as to the inner artist soul in everyone.
Thank you for visiting my web site. I hope we have the chance to meet,
and that you will have an opportunity to see my work in person.
